Ocean 39 Explorer - Gnomon Exclusive

(117 Reviews)

"Today, the so-called 'Explorer' dial is very fashionable and sought after.”

The Steinhart Ocean 39 Explorer bears the vintage charm of the 1960s dive watches that, has a rare dial layout with the combination of three arabic numbers along with standard baton hour markers. This special edition is made exclusively for Gnomon Watches and bears a close resemblance to the much recognized Ocean One Vintage but not without some differences. The Ocean 39 Explorer will be made in limited production to maintain it's exclusivity.

Steinhart Ocean 39 Explorer - Gnomon Exclusive

The Steinhart Ocean 39 Explorer is made to the highest of Swiss standard with true vintage flair. The case of the Steinhart Ocean 39 is made from 316L stainless steel. Features a satin brushed finish on the top of the lugs and polished sides of the case, like how an old-school dive watch was finished in the 1960s. This finishing follows through the stainless steel bracelet. The 39mm case has a 47mm lug-to-lug dimensions making this quite comfortable on most wrist sizes.

The charm of the Ocean 39 Explorer lies in it's dial, and where things just get interesting. With many requests from collectors, taking design cues from rare dive watches that are highly sought after from the 1960s. Why is it so? The dial layout, which is coined as the “Explorer-style” dial was first found on super rare 60s dive watches, where the arabic 3-6-9 numbers are applied on a tri-compax layout.

Drilled Through Lugs - History Inspired

Moving on, the handset is gold gilt, filled with “old-radium” Superluminova, that matches the dial's aged markers and wordings. For the first time Steinhart introduced drilled lug holes in the Ocean 39 collection. No details were spared in the making of the Ocean 39 Explorer. Therefore making the Ocean 39 Explorer a modern interpretation of this vintage magical charisma for watch enthusiast.

Oh, did we mention the bezel is polished to be as close to the original as possible? It has the classic diver bezel, with a luminous pip at the 12 o'clock position. The knurling on the side of the bezel is deep and clean. This helps in getting a good grip on the bezel for easy bezel operation. The 120 clicks bezel clicks positively into position.

Matching Gold Gilted Hands

The Steinhart signed screw-down crown is located at 3 O'clock and is suitable for a water resistant rating of 330ft. The Ocean 39 Explorer comes with a domed sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating for added clarity under different lighting conditions. The Ocean 39 Explorer has a solid case back that features engravings of essential information of the watch.

The Steinhart Ocean 39 Explorer is powered by automatic caliber, SW 200, operating at 28,800 BPH (4 Hertz) with hacking and hand winding capabilities. It has 25 jewels with a power reserve of approximately 40 hours.

"Old-Radium" SuperLuminova

The Steinhart Ocean 39 Explorer comes with a satin brushed stainless steel bracelet with screw links and flip lock. Unique to the Ocean 39 Explorer is, of course, the new 20mm bracelet which tapers to 16mm. Makes the 39mm model look much more refined and elegant.

Overall, the Steinhart Ocean 39 Explorer is one exclusive model that exhibits “explorer” type dial. It is packed with great value and is suitable for those who think the 42mm Oceans are too big. We are in love with the explorer dial as it is a refreshing breakaway from the usual submariner dial design.

Like every Steinhart x Gnomon collaboration, this will end up in the hall of fame. For the price, you get a Swiss Made watch with an SW200 Elaboré movement, a full 316L stainless steel 300m diver watch with SEL bracelet and an overall well finished sturdy watch. This was before not achievable until Steinhart arrived and also probably the reason why Steinhart has quite a vast following although only been around for only 15 years.
