The 1960s is widely known as the golden era for watches, especially for dive watches. In 1965, Seiko unevilled Japan's first ever dive watch - the legendary 150 meters automatic Seiko Ref. 62MAS. The first reiteration of the 6159-7001 came along with Ref. SBDC061 and SBDC063 "Baby MM" which has since been discontinued and replaced with the upgraded "Baby MM Reduced" Ref. SBDC127 /SBP 187 and Ref. SBDC125 /SPB185 which took design cues from the MM300. Fast forward to 2023, Seiko spiced up its Seiko 5 collection introducing a GMT function powered by the new 4R36 movement.

Riding the GMT wave, Seiko expands its Prospex collection with another striking mechanical GMT diver. Just a few months ago, to celebrate the brand's 60th anniversary, Seiko upgraded this Diver's GMT to 300m of water resistance with a limited edition. And now, it is coming back again with a general release, the Seiko Prospex Scuba 1968 Heritage GMT SBEJ029.

The case of the Prospex GMT Divers continues the classic case design reminiscent of the MM300, recognized for its solid shoulders, angular shapes, wide bezel, strong lines all around the case beautifully finished with a mix of polished surfaces.

Seiko Calibre 6R54 With 72 Hours Power Reserve

The top of the lugs are meticulously finished with satin brushing that dips downwards to a high polish mirror finish on the side of the case. A streak of brushed finishing across the side of the case divides the polished finishing to create a handsome contrast between the finishes, making the watch look incredibly refined.

The case retains a well-balanced 42mm diameter, now refined with improved ergonomics and a stronger emphasis on comfort, thanks to its shorter lugs. Prospex Diver fans will appreciate the sleeker proportions, with a reduced lug to lug measurement of 48.6mm and a relatively slim 13.3mm profile, which is impressive given the added GMT functionality. On the wrist, the watch wears more compact than its dimensions suggest, offering an elegant presence that transitions effortlessly from an adventure-ready tool watch to a refined companion for dressier occasions. The central 24 hour hand can be adjusted independently, functioning as the "Travel Time" for effortless tracking across time zones. This 24 jewel movement operates at a beat rate of 3 Hz, or 21,600 vibrations per hour, delivering reliable performance for daily wear and global adventures alike.

The timepiece is completed with a meticulously crafted 20mm stainless steel bracelet, finely finished to match the case's intricate details. For the first time in a regular model, it features a new clasp that can be adjusted in six increments of 2.5mm, offering a maximum adjustment range of 15mm. This allows the watch to be comfortably adjusted not only when diving but also during everyday wrist size changes, ensuring a perfect fit at all times.
