With a history of over a hundred years, MIDO is one of the mid-range and quality watchmaking brands with a speciality in protecting timepieces from external elements. For example, the brand developed a cork sealing system for the crown to enhance water tightness in the 1930s. The 1961 Ocean Star is another of MIDO’s brainchilds, enabling the brand to expand its Ocean Star series. Today we introduce the latest edition to the collection, namely, the blue and red rendition of the OCEAN STAR GMT Blue Ref. M026.629.11.041.00.
Mido Ocean Star GMT Blue/Red Ref. M026.629.11.041.00 |
Manufactured according to the robust fundamentals of the Ocean Star dive watch, the M026.629.11.041.00 lends more practicality and wearability to the already stunning specifications of the Ocean Star model. Its round stainless steel case measures 44mm across, and it has a lug width of 22mm, a width of 44mm as well as a thickness of 13.4mm. A serrated bezel crowns the top of the timepiece with a blue ceramic insert and a white diving scale. Mido indicates the Ocean Star GMT weighs 209 grams, making it a rock-solid piece to wear around or keep in one’s collection.
On the soothingly dark blue dial, the day/night indicator is colored in two-tone red and blue as well as has a 24-hours scale. We can appreciate the conspicuous applied rectangular hour indices, with a double square one at 12 and 6 o’clock, along with a white minute track. The date window at three o’clock halves the hour index, whereas the central hour and minute hands are partly skeletonized. The central seconds hand’s red tip blends in seamlessly with the color scheme of the watch. The wearer can successfully set the GMT hand that is finished in red with a triangular tip directly via the crown. Super-LumiNova inserts coat all elements for enhanced readability in dark conditions.
Calibre 80 – Based on the ETA C07.661 |
Movement-wise, there is much to celebrate. This Mido Ocean Star GMT Special Edition makes full use of the ETA movements enjoyed by Swatch Group members and is thus bedecked with the Mido Caliber ETA, according to the ETA C07.661. This sturdy automatic movement operates at a rate of 21,600vph and offers a decent 80 hours of power reserve. Furthermore, the movement adds the fourth GMT hand (adjacent to the central hours, minutes and seconds) that is adjustable via the crown. Moreover, this quality movement is well concealed from view thanks to a sealed caseback engraved with a scale of 24 international time zones.
A standard MIDO stainless steel bracelet with brushed outer links and polished center links accompanies this new watch. This bracelet is tailored to a folding clasp with an integrated diving extension and has Quick-release spring bars that permit a seamless swap for the additional textile military nylon strap. The additional strap is colored in blue with red and white straps and with leather reinforcement patches.
